Class Code: 8824

Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:

These types of facilities may offer a continuum of healthcare services to their residents. These facilities include, but are not limited to, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, adult congregate living facilities, retirement living centers, and memory care facilities.

Code 8824 also applies to continuing care retirement communities. These communities may offer more than one kind of housing and different levels of care. In the same community, there may be individual homes or apartments for residents who still live on their own, an assisted living facility for people who need some help with daily care, and a nursing home for those who require more care. The healthcare services offered typically include personal and nursing or medical care services. Personal care services, sometimes referred to as assisted living care, include assistance with daily living activities such as, but not limited to, ambulation, bathing, and dressing. Nursing or medical care includes physical therapy as well as the administration of drugs, preparations, or medications.

Employers classified to Code 8824 provide various levels of healthcare depending on the residents’ needs. The extent of professional or medical services provided by these healthcare providers includes complete medical care for postoperative patients and patients requiring extensive nursing care due to various illnesses such as terminal cancer, kidney disorders, and heart disease, as well as facilities where the patients require only minimal medical or professional care.

Some facilities do not employ resident physicians but instead have arrangements wherein physicians are on call for emergencies. In some states, the licensing authority requires registered nurses to be on duty. Generally, these facilities will employ therapists, practical nurses, nurses’ aides, and orderlies to afford the necessary medical care to their patients.

Food service employees and all other employees who perform non-healthcare activities are to be separately rated to Code 8826.

Code 8824 additionally includes administrative healthcare personnel who do not qualify for assignment to Code 8810. Administrative healthcare personnel may include health or medical service directors, nursing home administrators, nursing service directors, resident health clinic directors, and resident care coordinators.

Codes 8824 and 8826 are not applicable to hospitals (refer to Codes 8833 and 9040).

Refer to Code 8842 for group homes, group foster homes, and halfway houses that provide rehabilitation services, shelters, and independent supportive living homes for mentally, physically, or emotionally challenged individuals.

Senior citizen centers for seniors in need of care and limited medical assistance that do not provide overnight sleeping accommodations are classified to Codes 8868 and 9101.
