Class Code: 8292

Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:

Code 8292 is applied to employers engaged in the warehousing or storage of general merchandise for other business concerns provided such operations are not otherwise classified in the Basic Manual. Firms falling within the scope of this classification have no equity in the merchandise they store. For example, if an entity operates a chain of stores and maintains a central storage warehouse for distribution of goods owned to its various stores, then that warehouse is properly assigned to the applicable store classification, not Code 8292.

Code 8292 operations involve the care and maintenance of the warehouse and its equipment and the receiving, safekeeping, and subsequent release of the merchandise from storage. Such merchandise is usually stored over long periods of time and there is no exposure to constant piling or breaking down of the merchandise. Code 8292 is assigned to the storage of bulk materials such as dry cement and rice, coffee, potatoes, peanuts, or other nonperishable food products. As indicated in this classification’s footnote, drivers engaged in hauling general merchandise to or from the warehouse are separately rated to the appropriate trucking classification. Refer to these scopes to determine their proper application.

The distinction between assignment of the freight-handling codes 7350F and 7360 and assignment of a warehousing classification such as Code 8292 is based on the premise that warehousing operations store goods for long periods of time. With respect to freight handlers, there is a constant movement of goods by employees who are frequently engaged in receiving, sorting, tiering, or breaking down the goods handled. This constant handling hazard is a distinguishing factor when compared to a warehousing classification such as Code 8292.

Code 8292 is a “not otherwise classified” (NOC) classification. This means that Code 8292 applies to an employer’s operation(s) only when no other classification more specifically describes the employer’s operation(s). The following is a representative list of operations somewhat related in nature to Code 8292 operations that are not assigned to Code 8292.

7360 Freight Handling NOC 8018 Store—Wholesale NOC
8291 Storage Warehouse—Cold 2174 Tobacco Rehandling or Warehousing
8293 Storage Warehouse—Furniture & Drivers
