Class Code: 5146

Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:

Code 5146, a “not otherwise classified” classification, contemplates the installation of furniture or fixtures in stores or offices. The classification includes, but is not limited to, the installation of bulletin boards, chalkboards, corkboards, dental equipment, display tables, door closures, filing equipment, hospital equipment, lockers, modular workstations, partitions, shelving, showcases, soda counters, stock bins and theater seats.

Code 5146 contemplates the assembly and installation of the aforementioned products using hand tools and attaching devices such as screws, nuts and bolts. Generally, the manufactured parts are received from outside sources in a “ready cut” or “knockdown” state. While Code 5146 contemplates the assembly of products from premanufactured parts received from others, there may be some minor carpentry or sheet metal work incidental to the installation of the furniture or fixtures.

When the installation of the above (furniture or fixtures) equipment requires electrical or plumbing work, these operations are separately classified to Codes 5190 and 5183, respectively. For purposes of this interpretation, electrical work refers to the installation of outlets and all necessary wiring to extend the electrical current to the newly installed outlet. It does not contemplate running a wire from one location to another to plug the wire into an existing outlet. This work is considered incidental to the installation operation, is not considered electrical work, and is included under Code 5146.

The installation of floating or access floors is classified to Code 5146. These floors provide accessible space under a floor for the installation of a variety of equipment such as computer cables, piping, conduits and heating or cooling systems. The floors are typically supported by pedestal jacks over which interlocking stringers or flanges and steel two-by-two panels covered with floor tile are laid in place.

Code 5146 is applicable to risks engaged in setting up or taking down exhibits or booths at trade shows and conventions.

Certain Code 5146 operations are designated as “not otherwise classified” (NOC). These NOC operations shall apply to an insured only when no other classification more specifically describes the insured’s operations. The following is a representative list of operations somewhat related in nature to Code 5146 operations that are not assigned to Code 5146.
