Class Code: 4693

Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:

Code 4693 is applicable to insureds engaged in pharmaceutical goods manufacturing. The phrase “pharmaceutical goods manufacturing” for purposes of this classification does not contemplate the manufacture of drugs, medicines or other pharmaceutical preparations such as toothpastes, ointments and cosmetics.

Code 4693 is applicable to the manufacture of a broad spectrum of pharmaceutical goods including large and small articles such as braces for the handicapped, magnetic blankets, arch supports, bunion straps, artificial limbs of metal or wood, corn plasters, trusses and surgical dressings such as compresses, and bandages.

Raw materials used in the manufacturing process may vary greatly, and can include materials ranging from cotton, leather, rubber, wood, light metals and glass.

It is important to distinguish between the insured that manufactures pharmaceutical goods using some or all of the above materials and the pharmaceutical goods manufacturer that manufactures a product using only one of the aforementioned materials. In the former situation, Code 4693 is applicable. In the latter situation, a specialty classification may be applicable. For example, one insured may manufacture rubber gloves; another latex breathing bags for hospital respirators. When these types of insureds are engaged exclusively in the manufacture of a rubber or latex product, the appropriate rubber or latex goods manufacturing classification is assigned. This procedure is based on the premise that these risks are more homogeneous with rubber or latex goods manufacturers and the fact that Code 4693 is an NOC classification.

The Code 4693 manufacturing process may involve machining and/or simple hand-assembling and packaging. Employees may range from highly trained chemical engineers, physicians, chemists and pharmacists to labelers and packers.

Code 4693 operations are designated as “not otherwise classified” (NOC). NOC operations shall apply to an insured only when no other classification more specifically describes the insured’s operations. The following is a representative list of classifications somewhat related in nature to Code 4693 operations that are not assigned to Code 4693.

4692 Dental Laboratory
4825 Drug, Medicine or Pharmaceutical Preparation Mfg.
4611 Drug, Medicine or Pharmaceutical Preparation—No Mfg. of Ingredients

In addition to this representative list, one should review sources such as the alphabetical index in this manual to determine whether a classification other than Code 4693 or a classification other than one on the above list is applicable to the operations being reviewed for classification purposes.
