Class Code: 4431

Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:

Code 4431 is applied to insureds engaged in the manufacture or assembly of cassettes, videotapes, CDs, DVDs, and other recording media. This classification is also applicable to the manufacture of phonograph records. Cassettes and videotapes are manufactured through a process of polymerization in a clean-room environment. The tape is coated with a ferromagnetic material and then wound in a protective plastic shell. CDs and DVDs are manufactured from a polycarbonate material using an injection mold and vacuum evaporation process.

Analogy Assignments:

•    Insureds engaged in the manufacture or assembly of cassettes, with magnetic recording tapes received from others, have also been assigned by analogy to this classification.

Equipment and Materials:

•    Polymer
•    Ferromagnetic material (ferric oxide powder)
•    Die-casting cylinders
•    Heaters and rollers
•    Presses and cutting machines
•    Computers

Related Operations Not Classified to Code 4431:

•    Refer to Code 4360 for insureds engaged in the duplication and replication of prerecorded cassette tapes, motion pictures, videotapes, or computer disks.

To make records, raw materials such as polymer, shellac, or vinyl are ground, mixed, melted, and worked into a plastic consistency on hot rolls. The resultant sheets or strips are placed in heated presses, and master discs are compressed against both sides of the heated material. After cooling and hardening, the records are inspected, tested, labeled, packaged, and shipped.
