Class Code: 4283
Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:
Code 4283 is applied to insureds engaged principally in the preparation of building or roofing paper or the preparation of felt, asphalt shingles and asphalt sidings. Crude oil, coal tar oil, paper, felt, talc, roofing granules, limestone powder, granulated slate and mica are received from others. The operations include incidental distillation or refining of the crude oil or coal tar oil to produce the asphalt or tar to be used in the saturation of paper or felt, which is the primary operation of insureds classified under this code. Crude oil or coal tar oil is refined in heated stills to extract the asphalt or tar. The asphalt or tar is heated and pumped into saturation tanks. The paper or felt is then saturated with hot asphalt or tar. Some saturated paper or felt may be coated with talc or roofing granules. The building or roofing paper or felt is then cooled, dried, wound on winding machines, wrapped and labeled for shipment. Insureds engaged in making asphalt shingles or sidings follow the same procedures except that felt is saturated and rolled several times. Limestone powder is added to the asphalt for the last coating, the face of the saturated felt is covered with granulated slate to make it weather resistant, and the back is coated with mica. After cooling, the prepared felt is fed into special equipment where it is cut to size to produce the asphalt shingles or sidings, which are stacked, tied in bundles, packaged and labeled for shipment.
