Class Code: 4131
Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:
Code 4131 is applied to insureds engaged in the manufacture of mirrors that range from pocket-size to wall panels of varied types. Glass, plating solutions, polishing, cleaning and protective materials and frames, backs, handles and other accessories are received from others. Mirrors are generally produced by the chemical deposition of metal on glass. For commercial and many scientific purposes, silver is the metal most commonly used. The glass is cut to size, ground, smoothed and in some cases edges may be beveled. Hole drilling, chemical etching, drying, buffing and polishing are also performed. Reflecting surfaces are generally produced by pouring or spraying the appropriate metallic solution over the prepared glass. Heavier coats are obtained by successive applications of the plating solution. For the production of mirrors for scientific instruments, the vapor process is used. Metal in wire form and glass sheets are placed in an electrically wired vacuum chamber which is then heated to a temperature sufficient to cause the metal to vaporize and subsequently condense on the glass sheets. After silvering, the mirrors are sprayed or hand brushed with shellac or varnish, then with paint. Cleaning, inspecting and individual wrapping and packing follow. This classification contemplates assembling incidental to the production of framed mirrors, trays, mirror-edged picture frames and other novelties.
The operations are predominantly hand assembling. The reconditioning of old mirrors also is assigned to Code 4131.
This classification is assigned to risks engaged in the manufacture of custom glass items such as video game tops, glass used in the assembly of electrical appliances such as microwave ovens, electronically controlled cabinets and display panels. The operations entail the cutting and/or bending of the glass to size, beveling, tempering, metallizing, drilling and fitting for switches or other electronic controls, silk-screening for required logos, instructions, designs, etc.
