Class Code: 4061

Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:

Code 4061 is applied to insureds engaged in the manufacture of glazed or porcelain earthenware pottery by a hand molded or casting process. Some of the products contemplated within the scope of this classification are porcelain bathtubs, sinks and commodes, as well as household utensils such as earthenware pots and cruets, bean pots, cookie jars, flower pots, urns and vases.

Code 4061 contemplates mold making, usually from plaster of paris, which is received from others along with clay, sand, fluxing agents, paints and glazing compounds. Material preparation in the “Slip House” consists of unloading, weighing and mixing to form the “Slip,” which is screened and kneaded automatically. The clay is poured into plaster molds in automatic molding machines or placed on potter’s wheels and molded by hand. When dried, the formed greenware is sanded and fired to form bisqueware, which is cleaned and then dipped or sprayed with glaze. A second firing completes the glazing. Prior to glazing, some products may be decorated by painting. Some products are crated while others are packaged for shipment.

Refer to Code 4036 for the manufacture of cultured marble products such as bathroom vanity tops, shower pans and bathtubs.
