Class Code: 4021

Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:

Code 4021 applies to employers that manufacture brick or clay products including earthenware or tiles that are of a structural nature. The structural clay products are best described in this classification’s phraseology and its accompanying footnote. Code 4021 includes employers that may perform clay, shale, or sand digging operations, that may involve a minor amount of blasting to loosen the clay. This classification further includes the grinding and mixing of the proportioned raw materials in a mixing machine. The partly fluid substance is mechanically poured into standard or specially shaped molds depending upon the product being produced. All products are dried by natural warm air or steam heat. After removal from the molds, the products are baked in temporary or permanent kilns. If glazing is desired, salt is added to the kiln. The salt vaporizes and coats the products. Also, to produce a greater degree of concentration, pressing or repressing operations may be performed, usually with hydraulic presses, subsequent to the actual formation of the products.

Code 4021 is a “not otherwise classified” (NOC) classification. This means that Code 4021 will apply to an employer’s operation(s) only when no other classification more specifically describes the employer’s operation(s). The following is a representative list of operations somewhat related in nature to Code 4021 operations that are not assigned to Code 4021.
