Class Code: 2710

Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:

Code 2710 is assigned to insureds engaged in sawing logs into desired lengths to produce rough lumber by use of circular carriage or band saws. It applies to all sawmills, whether portable or stationary. It is assigned to employees operating chip harvesting machinery in a logging area if such employees are not also engaged in logging or lumbering operations. Chip harvesters and other similar machinery have been considered analogous to portable sawmills.

Code 2710 includes the “Green Chain” operations. These operations involve employees engaged in grading, removing and sorting lumber at the conveyor called the “Green Chain” as it comes from the saws or sawmill, and storage of the green lumber in the yard. The subsequent dry kiln operations or stacking and air drying operations or the handling of the processed lumber activities in the yard are assigned to Code 8232—Lumberyards.

If an insured’s business qualifies for Codes 2710 and 8232, individual employee payrolls may be allocated between these codes. Refer to Basic Manual Interchange of Labor rules for requirements that must be met for an insured to qualify for this payroll allocation. Please note that the business must first qualify for Codes 2710 and 8232 before individual employee payrolls may be allocated between them.

Code 2710 applies to the production of shingles and wood chips, the manufacture of red cedar split post rails for fences, and the sawmill operations involved in the manufacture of prefab log homes or cabins. The manufacture of wood shavings is assigned to Code 2710 when these operations take place in a sawmill environment using raw materials (logs) and machinery typically found in a sawmill. Refer to Code 2731 for the manufacture of wood shavings (excelsior) when these operations take place in a planing or molding mill. Refer to Code 2960 for log home or cabin manufacturing other than sawmill operations.

State Addendum
Massachusetts If an insured qualifies for Codes 2710 and 8232, individual employee payrolls may not be allocated between these codes. Refer to MA Manual, Rule IV-E, and note that such a division of payroll is not allowable. Code 2710 also applies to the manufacture of excelsior (wood shavings). Refer to Code 2802 for prefabricated log house or cabin manufacturing other than sawmill operations.
