Class Code: 1803
Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:
Code 1803 is applicable to employers that cut, grind, sandblast, polish, and engrave stone such as limestone, granite, marble, and slate and includes stone dealers that polish and engrave. Quarrying and mining of the stone by these employers would be separately rated. Also, any stone cutting operations performed at quarry sites would be rated under the applicable quarry classifications.
This classification is also applied to employers that perform slate milling. The term “milling” under Code 1803 does not involve a crushing operation. It involves the use of various types of saws or other apparatus to cut and smooth the surface of the slate prior to being sold in slab or sheet form.
Code 1803 is applied to retail monument dealers that purchase cut and polished monuments or gravestones from wholesale monument manufacturers, which are also assigned to this classification. The retail monument dealers engrave the monuments with appropriate artwork, lettering, and dates by abrasive blasting according to their customer’s specifications. The wholesale manufacturer receives split and rough cut stone at a location away from the quarry or mine. The stone is cut to block size. Some blocks (paving blocks) are sold without further processing. The remaining blocks are polished and subsequently cut into monuments or gravestones prior to shipment to retail monument dealers.
Grindstone and millstone manufacturing, lithographic stone manufacturing, and marble or slate mantle manufacturing are also assigned to Code 1803.
Soapstone or steatite is defined as massive talc found in extensive beds and used for the production of various products. Code 1803 is also assigned to the turning and carving of alabaster to form vases and other decorative accessories and ornamental objects.
Certain Code 1803 operations are designated as “not otherwise classified” (NOC). These NOC operations apply to an employer only when no other classification more specifically describes the employer’s operations. The following is a representative list of classifications somewhat related in nature to Code 1803 operations that are not assigned to Code 1803:
|Quarry NOC & Drivers
|Stone Crushing & Drivers
|Welding or Cutting NOC & Drivers
