Class Code: 1430
Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:
Code 1430 is applied to insureds who operate lead mills and smelters. Ore is received, crushed, washed and screened. There may be various steps of milling, concentration or amalgamation, preparatory to the sintering of the ore. The ore is sintered by passing through ignited burners which semi-crystalize the ore as they burn away sulphur and conglomerate gases. The crystals are then conveyed to blast furnaces for smelting. Lead is drained off into vats, which are emptied into drossing tanks. The drossed ore or pure lead is fed to automatic fill dies where it is cast into ingots. This classification also contemplates the manufacture of red lead (a lead oxide) and white lead (a heavy, poisonous, basic carbonate of lead of variable composition).
