Class Code: 1005
Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:
This classification is applicable to the excavation of coal at or near the surface. If necessary, the overburden is excavated or stripped away to expose the vein of coal. Power shovels are used to excavate the coal, but it may be necessary to employ blasting to free the coal from rock formations or break up the coal for the power shovel to handle. In some instances, draglines will be used to remove excess earth and rock from the mining area. Some operators crush the coal to various sizes, grading being done by shaking the pieces through various sized screens. The equipment generally involves the use of power shovels, draglines, bulldozers, drilling and blasting devices, conveyors, crushers and trucks.
